D-Up Wins 1st Place and advances to the Minnesota Cup by Lanie Altmann ’20

On Saturday, May 11, the Gustie Entrepreneur Cup was held in Alumni Hall. Seven teams presented their ideas to the judges: John Bergstrom ’82, Betsy Byers, Michelle Courtright ’99, Jann Eichlersmith ’85, Debby Gustafson ’85, Brent Harms ’82, Bob LaBombard, Russ Michaletz ’74, and Ari Silkey ’99.

The teams included Twigit, The Thinking Tank, Campus Cab, D-Up, School Shark, Hygenre, and Heart Watch. The First Place winner was Alijah Nelson ‘19 for D-Up. He received $5,000 and an automatic advancement to the semi-finals of the Minnesota Cup. Second Place was Arthur Parens ‘19, Brandon Pogue ‘20, and Joe Siebels ‘20 for HeartWatch ($3,000). Third Place winners were John Campisi ‘21, Weston Lombard ‘21, and Christian Johnson ‘21 for School Shark ($2,000).

As the VP of Alumni and Student Outreach, this was such an amazing event to be a part of. Seeing some of the most innovative alumni come back to support current Gusties, was inspiring. They showed that the reason I chose to come to Gustavus, was a positive choice. It was such a fun experience that I recommend everyone take part of whether that be through the Leadership Committee or creating your own idea to present in front of the judges. I learned that if you ever need help, the Gustavus network will always be there to support you and guide you through anything and everything.
